  名詞

  言葉や考えに意味がなかったり、筋が通っていなかったりすることを表します。相手の発言を強く否定するときにも使います。

使い方

• 数えられない名詞として使うことが多い

  nonsense は普通、uncountable noun（不可算名詞）です。多くの場合 a nonsense や nonsenses ではなく、That's nonsense. のように使います。

• 強い否定の言葉

  相手の発言に対して That's nonsense. と言うと、「それはばかげている」「でたらめだ」とかなり強く否定する響きがあります。丁寧な場面では That doesn't seem correct. などの方がやわらかいです。

• adjective としては名詞の前に置く

  nonsense word（意味のない言葉）、nonsense rule（ばかげた規則）のように、名詞の前で形容詞的に使えます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: That's a nonsense.

  正: That's nonsense.

  nonsense は普通、不可算名詞なので a を付けません。ただし a nonsense word のように、nonsense が形容詞的に名詞を説明する場合は別です。

• 誤: He said many nonsenses.

  正: He said a lot of nonsense.

  nonsense は通常複数形にしません。「たくさんのたわごと」は a lot of nonsense と言います。

• 誤: Your idea is no sense.

  正: Your idea makes no sense.

  「意味をなさない」は make no sense が自然です。nonsense は名詞なので、文の形に注意が必要です。
