使い方

• existence of の形が多い

  「〜の存在」は the existence of ... と言うのが自然です。例: the existence of life「生命の存在」。

• existence と life の違い

  life は一般的に「命・人生・生活」を表す日常的な語です。existence は「存在している状態」を強調し、life より硬く抽象的です。

• come into existence

  come into existence は「存在し始める、誕生する」という意味のよく使われる表現です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I don't know the existence of this rule.

  正: I don't know about the existence of this rule.

  know the existence だけでは不自然です。「〜の存在を知っている」は know about the existence of ... や be aware of the existence of ... が自然です。

• 誤: The existence is important for this animal.

  正: The animal's existence is important to the ecosystem.

  existence は抽象名詞なので、何の存在かを所有格や of で明確にすると自然です。

• 誤: There is an existence of many problems.

  正: Many problems exist.

  日本語の「存在する」に引っぱられて existence を使いすぎると不自然です。単に exist を使うほうが自然な場合があります。
