本質、核心 物事や人をそのものらしくしている、最も大切な性質や中心部分を表す名詞です。
要点、最も重要な部分 話、考え、計画などの中で、一番大事なポイントを指します。特に「the essence of ...」の形でよく使います。
エッセンス、精油、抽出液 植物や食べ物などから取り出した、香りや味の強い液体を指します。料理や香水、化粧品などで使われます。

essence と essential の違い
essence は名詞で「本質」「要点」です。essential は形容詞で「不可欠な」「非常に重要な」という意味です。例: the essence of the idea（その考えの本質）、essential information（不可欠な情報）。

よく使う形: the essence of ...
「〜の本質」「〜の要点」と言うときは the essence of ... が自然です。抽象的な話題、性格、問題、考えなどによく使います。

in essence の意味
in essence は「本質的には」「要するに」という意味のやや書き言葉寄りの表現です。短く言うと basically や essentially に近いですが、少し硬めです。

機械の部品について「中心部」「主要部品」と言う場合、essence は不自然です。essence は物理的な部品より、抽象的な本質や要点に使います。

「〜の本質・要点」は the essence of ... と言います。about ではなく of を使うのが自然です。

essence はラテン語 essentia（存在、本質）に由来します。さらに essentia は esse（ある、存在する）と関係があります。つまり、もともと「それが何であるか」という根本的な性質を表す語です。
