• tell apart との違い

  tell apart は日常会話でよく使う「見分ける」です。distinguish は少し硬めで、違いを理解する・分類する場面にも使いやすい語です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I can't distinguish their difference.

  正: I can't distinguish between them.

  distinguish は「違いを区別する」という意味を含むため、their difference を目的語にすると不自然です。「彼らを区別できない」は distinguish between them が自然です。
