使い方

• distance between と distance from

  2つのものの間の距離は the distance between A and B と言います。ある地点から別の地点までの距離は the distance from A to B と言えます。

• 形容詞は distant

  distance は名詞または動詞です。「遠い」と言いたいときは形容詞 distant や far を使います。例: a distant village「遠くの村」。

• in the distance

  in the distance は「遠くに」という決まった表現です。景色や音などが遠くにある・聞こえるときによく使います。

よくある間違い

• 誤: The distance is far.

  正: The distance is great.

  distance は「距離」なので、形容詞 far ではなく great, long, short などで表すのが自然です。日常会話では It's far. と言うことも多いです。

• 誤: Tokyo is a long distance to Osaka.

  正: The distance from Tokyo to Osaka is long.

  distance を使う場合は from A to B や between A and B の形が自然です。

• 誤: I want to distance with that problem.

  正: I want to distance myself from that problem.

  動詞 distance はよく distance oneself from ...「〜から距離を置く」の形で使います。with ではなく from を使います。
