使い方

• 「強い意志」の意味では主に不可算名詞

  目標に向かう気持ちを表すときは、通常 a determination ではなく determination と使います。例: She has determination. ただし「〜するという決意」は a determination to do の形も可能です。

• determination to do

  「〜しようとする決意」は determination to + 動詞の原形 が自然です。例: determination to succeed（成功しようとする決意）。

• decision より硬い「判断」

  日常会話では decision が一般的です。determination は、法律・行政・ビジネス文書などで、調査や検討の結果としての正式な判断を表すことがあります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: She has a strong determination for win.

  正: She has a strong determination to win.

  「勝とうとする決意」は determination to win のように to + 動詞の原形を使います。

• 誤: He did the project with a determination.

  正: He did the project with determination.

  「強い意志を持って」という意味では、ふつう determination は不可算名詞なので冠詞 a を付けません。

• 誤: The determination was difficult to decide the cause.

  正: The determination of the cause was difficult.

  「原因の特定」は the determination of the cause と言えます。determination 自体を主語にする場合、後ろに of + 名詞を置くと自然です。
