使い方

• meeting と conference の違い

  meeting は少人数の日常的な打ち合わせにも使えます。conference は参加者が多く、公式で、特定のテーマや専門分野に関する大きな会議・大会を表すことが多いです。

• conference は「出席する」なら attend を使う

  会議や学会に参加するという意味では attend a conference が自然です。join a conference はオンライン会議や電話会議に入る場合には使えます。

• press conference は「記者会見」

  ニュースでよく使われる表現です。単なる会議ではなく、報道陣に向けて発表や質疑応答を行う場を指します。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I joined a conference in Tokyo last week.

  正: I attended a conference in Tokyo last week.

  実際の会場で開かれる学会・大会に参加した場合は attend a conference が自然です。join はオンライン会議に入る場合によく使います。

• 誤: Our company made a conference yesterday.

  正: Our company held a conference yesterday.

  会議を「開く」は hold a conference が自然です。make a conference とは言いません。

• 誤: There were many conferences in the room.

  正: There were many people at the conference.
