使い方

• bump into は「偶然会う」または「ぶつかる」

  bump into someone は「人にばったり会う」という意味でよく使います。一方、bump into a wall のように物が相手なら「壁にぶつかる」という意味になります。文脈で判断します。

• hit より軽いことが多い

  bump は「ドンと軽く当たる」感じで、hit より少し軽く、日常的な響きがあります。ただし、けがをする場合にも使えます。

• bump up はカジュアルな「上げる」

  price, salary, budget, number などを少し上げるときに使います。正式な文章では increase のほうが無難です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I bumped to my friend at the station.

  正: I bumped into my friend at the station.

  「偶然会う」は bump into someone と言います。前置詞 into が必要です。

• 誤: I have a bump in my head.

  正: I have a bump on my head.

  頭の表面にある「こぶ」は on my head と言います。in my head は「頭の中に」という意味になり不自然です。

• 誤: The company bumped the price up by five percent up.

  正: The company bumped the price up by five percent.
