使い方

• building と house の違い

  building は学校、会社、病院、マンションなどを含む広い意味の「建物」です。house はふつう人が住む一戸建ての「家」を指します。

• building は数えられる名詞

  「1つの建物」は a building、「多くの建物」は buildings と言います。

• building of ～ はやや説明的

  「～の建設」という意味で the building of ～ と言えますが、日常では construction of ～ のほうがよく使われることもあります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I live in a tall build.

  正: I live in a tall building.

  build は主に動詞「建てる」です。名詞「建物」は building を使います。

• 誤: There are many building in this city.

  正: There are many buildings in this city.

  many の後は複数形にするので buildings が自然です。

• 誤: The building is building now.

  正: The building is under construction now.

  「その建物は今建設中です」は under construction が自然です。is building は「建てている」という動詞の形なので、主語は人や会社などが自然です。
