使い方

• brush one's teeth は「歯を磨く」

  英語では「歯を洗う」と言わず、普通は brush one's teeth と言います。toothbrush は「歯ブラシ」です。

• brush と paintbrush

  brush だけでも「ブラシ」「はけ」という意味になります。絵を描くための筆・はけを特に言いたいときは paintbrush と言えます。

• brush off は句動詞

  brush off は「払い落とす」という意味のほか、人の意見や心配を「軽くあしらう」という意味でも使います。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I wash my teeth every morning.

  正: I brush my teeth every morning.

  日本語の「歯を磨く」は英語で brush my teeth が自然です。wash my teeth は普通は使いません。

• 誤: She brushed her hair by a brush.

  正: She brushed her hair with a brush.

  道具を使うときは by ではなく with を使います。

• 誤: Please brush the oil on the bread by your hand.

  正: Please brush the oil on the bread with a pastry brush.

  料理で油などを薄く塗るときは brush the oil on... と言えます。道具は with で表します。
