使い方

• ban は強い「禁止」

  ban は個人的なお願いではなく、法律・規則・組織の決定として「禁止する」という強い語です。日常の軽い注意なら say no to や not allow の方が自然な場合があります。

• ban on と ban from の違い

  a ban on smoking のように ban on + 物事・行為 で「〜の禁止」。be banned from the club のように ban from + 場所・活動 で「〜から締め出される、参加を禁じられる」という意味です。

• 名詞と動詞で同じ形

  ban は動詞「禁止する」にも名詞「禁止令」にもなります。名詞では a ban on ...、動詞では ban something や ban someone from ... がよく使われます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: The school banned to use phones in class.

  正: The school banned the use of phones in class.

  ban の直後に to do は通常置きません。ban + 名詞、または ban someone from doing の形を使います。

• 誤: He was banned to enter the building.

  正: He was banned from entering the building.

  「〜することを禁止される」は be banned from doing が自然です。

  正: There is a ban on smoking in the station.
