使い方

• 名詞と動詞でアクセントが違う

  名詞 attribute は最初の音節に強勢があり「アトリビュート」に近く、動詞 attribute は第2音節に強勢があり「アトリビュート」の「トリ」の部分を強く読みます。

• attribute A to B の形で使う

  動詞では attribute A to B「AをBの原因・結果・出所だと考える」という形が基本です。to の後ろに原因・人物・出所が来ます。

• characteristic より少し硬い語

  名詞 attribute は characteristic や quality と近い意味ですが、日常会話よりも分析・説明・ビジネス・技術的な文脈で使われることが多いです。

よくある間違い

• 誤: She attributed her success for hard work.

  正: She attributed her success to hard work.

  attribute A to B の形を使います。原因や理由を表す前置詞は for ではなく to です。

• 誤: Honesty is a good attribute to him.

  正: Honesty is a good attribute of his.

  「彼の特質」と言うときは an attribute of his や one of his attributes が自然です。

• 誤: The report attributes that sales increased to advertising.

  正: The report attributes the increase in sales to advertising.

  attribute の目的語には、that節よりも名詞句が自然です。ここでは the increase in sales「売上の増加」を使います。
