使い方

• 人や場所には attack を使える

  物理的に襲う場合は attack a person, attack a village のように目的語を直接続けます。日本語の「〜を攻撃する」に近い使い方です。

• 批判の意味でも使う

  attack an idea や attack a policy は、暴力ではなく「考えや政策を強く批判する」という意味です。かなり強い表現なので、軽い反対には criticize の方が自然なことがあります。

• 病気の発作は名詞で使うことが多い

  heart attack は「心臓発作」、panic attack は「パニック発作」です。この attack は「突然起こる症状」を表します。

よくある間違い

• 誤: The dog attacked to me.

  正: The dog attacked me.

  attack は他動詞として使うことが多く、「〜を襲う」は attack + 人・物 です。to は不要です。

• 誤: He made an attack to the plan.

  正: He attacked the plan.

  「計画を批判した」は動詞 attack を使うと自然です。名詞なら an attack on the plan と言います。

• 誤: She got a heart attack.

  正: She had a heart attack.

  「心臓発作を起こす」は have a heart attack が自然な表現です。
