使い方

• worthwhile の基本形

  worthwhile は形容詞で、名詞の前に置いて「a worthwhile project」のように使えます。また「It is worthwhile to do ...」「It is worthwhile doing ...」の形で「〜する価値がある」と言えます。

• worth と worthwhile の違い

  worth はふつう「be worth 名詞／動名詞」の形で使い、「This book is worth reading.」のように言います。worthwhile は「価値がある・有意義だ」という性質を表す形容詞で、「a worthwhile book」「It is worthwhile to read this book.」のように使えます。

• worthwhile は少し評価が入る語

  単に便利というより、「時間や努力を使っても意味がある」「やってよかった」という前向きな評価を含みます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: It is worth to visit the museum.

  正: It is worthwhile to visit the museum.

  worth の後ろには通常 to不定詞を直接続けません。「worth visiting」または「worthwhile to visit」を使います。

• 誤: This meeting was worth while.

  正: This meeting was worthwhile.

  現代英語では形容詞としては一語の worthwhile が一般的です。

• 誤: The project is worthwhile doing it.

  正: The project is worthwhile.

  worthwhile は「そのプロジェクト自体に価値がある」という意味で使えるので、doing it を付けると不自然です。
