使い方

• there is と there are

  単数名詞や数えられない名詞には there is、複数名詞には there are を使います。例: There is a book. / There are two books.

• there と here の違い

  here は「ここ」、there は「そこ・あそこ」です。話し手に近い場所は here、話し手から離れた場所や相手側の場所は there を使います。

• 場所を表す there の前に to を置かないことが多い

  go there, come there, arrive there のように、there は副詞なので通常は to there とは言いません。ただし、名詞句の that place なら go to that place と言えます。

• their / they're との混同に注意

  there は「そこ」「〜がある」、their は「彼らの」、they're は they are の短縮形です。発音が似ていても意味とつづりが違います。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I went to there yesterday.

  正: I went there yesterday.

  there は場所を表す副詞なので、通常 go の後に前置詞 to を置きません。

• 誤: There is many people in the room.

  正: There are many people in the room.

  many people は複数なので、there are を使います。

• 誤: Their is a problem.

  正: There is a problem.

  「〜がある」と言うときは their ではなく there を使います。their は「彼らの」という意味です。
