• 囲む、取り囲む

  動詞

  人・物・場所のまわりをぐるっと囲むこと。四方から囲まれている感じを表します。

  音・雰囲気・感情など、形のないものが人や場所のまわりに広がっていること。

使い方

• 基本の形：surround A

  「Aを囲む」は surround A と言います。surround の直後に目的語を置きます。例：Trees surround the lake.（木々が湖を囲んでいる。）

• surround A with B

  「AをBで囲む」「Aの周りにBを置く」は surround A with B です。例：They surrounded the table with chairs.（彼らはテーブルの周りに椅子を置いた。）

• 受け身：be surrounded by / with

  「〜に囲まれている」は be surrounded by または be surrounded with を使います。by は囲んでいるものを説明するときに広く使われ、with は意図的に置かれた物や雰囲気を表すときにも使われます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: The lake is surrounded of trees.

  正: The lake is surrounded by trees.

  「〜に囲まれている」は surrounded by が自然です。of は使いません。

• 誤: Trees surround around the house.

  正: Trees surround the house.

  surround だけで「周りを囲む」という意味があるので、around を重ねる必要はありません。

• 誤: She surrounded herself by good books.

  正: She surrounded herself with good books.

  自分の周りに物や人を置く・集める意味では surround oneself with が自然です。
