使い方

• 名詞と動詞の基本

  名詞の sail は主に「帆」、動詞の sail は「船で行く」「帆船を操る」という意味です。文の中で a sail なら名詞、sail to the island のように動作なら動詞です。

• go sailing と go for a sail

  go sailing は「ヨットに乗る・セーリングをする」という活動を表します。go for a sail は「船に乗って少し出かける」という感じです。

• 船の出発にも使う

  The ship sails at noon. は「その船は正午に出航する」という意味です。電車や飛行機には普通 sail は使いません。

よくある間違い

• 誤: We will sail the island tomorrow.

  正: We will sail to the island tomorrow.

  目的地を言うときは sail to ... を使います。sail the boat は「船を操る」という意味になります。

• 誤: I want to drive a sailing boat.

  正: I want to sail a boat.

  帆を使って船を動かす場合は drive より sail が自然です。motorboat なら drive a boat と言うこともあります。

• 誤: The ship will sail at the airport.

  正: The ship will sail from the port.

  sail は船の出発に使うので、場所は airport ではなく port などが自然です。
