使い方

• 他動詞として使う

  represent はふつう直後に目的語を置きます。例えば「This symbol represents love.」と言い、「represents for love」とは言いません。

• 「代表する」と「表す」の両方に注意

  represent は人・団体を「代表する」意味でも、記号や絵が何かを「表す」意味でも使われます。文脈で判断しましょう。

• 割合ではややフォーマル

  「A represents 40% of B」は「AがBの40%を占める」という意味で、報告書やニュースでよく使われます。日常会話では make up もよく使います。

よくある間違い

• 誤: This sign represents for danger.

  正: This sign represents danger.

  represent は他動詞なので、「〜を表す」の意味では for を入れず、目的語を直接続けます。

• 誤: He represents to our team.

  正: He represents our team.

  「チームを代表する」は represent our team と言います。to は不要です。

• 誤: The red color is represented passion.

  正: The red color represents passion.

  能動の意味なら represents を使います。be represented は「表されている」という受け身の形です。
