使い方

• 「表現」と「代表」の両方で使う

• 不可算・可算の両方がある

  概念としての「代表・表現」は不可算で使われることが多く、具体的な絵・図・説明などは可算名詞として a representation / representations と言えます。

  legal representation は、弁護士などが本人の代わりに法的手続きを助けることを意味します。「法律の表現」と訳さないように注意します。

よくある間違い

• 誤: The picture is a representation about peace.

  正: The picture is a representation of peace.

  「〜を表したもの」は representation of ... が自然です。about は話題を表すことが多く、この場合は of がよく使われます。

• 誤: We need a representation in the meeting.

  正: We need a representative in the meeting.

  会議に出る「代表者」という人を指す場合は representative を使います。representation は「代表されること・代理・表現」という抽象的な名詞です。

• 誤: The data representation is easy to understand it.

  正: The data representation is easy to understand.

  easy to understand の後に it は不要です。主語が理解される対象なので、英語では目的語を重ねません。
