使い方

• 強い喜びを表す語

  rejoice は単なる be happy よりも強く、「大喜びする」「心から喜ぶ」という意味です。少しフォーマル、文学的、宗教的な文脈でもよく使われます。

• 前置詞との組み合わせ

  rejoice at the news、rejoice over a victory、rejoice in someone’s success のように使います。at は知らせや出来事、over は勝利・成功など、in は成功や幸せを深く味わう感じで使われます。

• 他動詞としてはまれ

  現代英語では rejoice は多くの場合、自動詞です。「彼を喜ばせる」と言いたいときは make him happy や delight him のほうが自然です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I rejoiced my friend with a gift.

  正: I made my friend happy with a gift.

  rejoice は普通「人を喜ばせる」という他動詞としては使いません。この場合は make someone happy が自然です。

• 誤: She rejoiced for the good news.

  正: She rejoiced at the good news.

  良い知らせに喜ぶ場合は rejoice at the news が自然です。

• 誤: They were rejoice after the victory.

  正: They rejoiced after the victory.

  rejoice は動詞なので、過去の出来事には rejoiced を使います。形容詞のように be rejoice とは言いません。
