使い方

• 「反対のもの」は the opposite of

  名詞として使うときは、ふつう the opposite of ... の形にします。例: the opposite of love「愛の反対」。

• 場所を表す opposite

  opposite the station は「駅の向かいに」という意味です。アメリカ英語では across from the station のほうが日常的に使われることもあります。

• 形容詞では名詞の前に置きやすい

  opposite directions「反対方向」、opposite opinions「反対の意見」のように、名詞の前でよく使います。

よくある間違い

• 誤: The cafe is opposite of the library.

  正: The cafe is opposite the library.

  場所を表す前置詞の opposite は、直後に名詞を置きます。opposite of はこの意味では不自然です。

• 誤: Hot is opposite cold.

  正: Hot is the opposite of cold.

  名詞として「〜の反対」と言うときは the opposite of ... が自然です。

• 誤: They went to opposite direction.

  正: They went in opposite directions.

  方向を表すときは in ... direction(s) を使います。2人以上が別々の逆方向へ行く場合は複数形 directions が自然です。
