notify は tell より少し正式
notify は「必要な情報を正式に知らせる」という感じがあり、仕事、学校、役所、アプリの通知などでよく使います。友達同士の軽い会話では tell のほうが自然なことが多いです。

基本形は notify someone of/about something
「人に〜を知らせる」は notify someone of something または notify someone about something と言います。that節も使えます。例: We notified customers that the service was down.

受け身でもよく使う
be notified は「通知される」という意味で、メールやシステム通知の文によく出ます。例: You will be notified when the results are ready.
