使い方

• 「余白」と「差」の両方で使う

  margin は紙の「余白」だけでなく、勝敗や数量の「差」、時間やお金の「余裕」も表します。文脈で意味を判断しましょう。

• by a margin の使い方

  勝った・負けた差を言うときは by a wide margin「大差で」、by a narrow margin「わずかな差で」のように by を使うのが自然です。

• business では利益に関係する語

  profit margin は「利益率」、gross margin は「粗利益率」、operating margin は「営業利益率」です。ビジネス英語で頻出します。

よくある間違い

• 誤: The team won with a narrow margin.

  正: The team won by a narrow margin.

  勝敗の差を表すときは、ふつう with ではなく by a narrow margin と言います。

  ページの余白の中に書く場合は in the margin が自然です。
