その代わりに、代わりとして 前に考えていたことや普通ならすることとは別の選択をするときに使います。文の終わりや文頭によく置きます。
〜の代わりに、〜ではなく 「instead of + 名詞 / 動名詞」で、何かをしないで別のことをする、または別のものを選ぶことを表します。
そうせずに、むしろ 前の文で述べた行動や考えを否定し、別の行動や考えを示すときに使います。

使い方

  • instead と instead of の違い

    instead は単独で「その代わりに」という副詞です。instead of は後ろに名詞や動名詞を続けて「〜の代わりに」と言います。例: I stayed home instead. / I stayed home instead of going out.

  • 文の位置

    instead は文末に置くことが多いですが、文頭にも置けます。文頭では少し強調されます。例: Instead, we tried a different method.

よくある間違い

  • 誤: I drank tea instead coffee.

    正: I drank tea instead of coffee.

    後ろに名詞 coffee を続ける場合は instead だけでなく instead of を使います。

  • 誤: She stayed home instead of go out.

    正: She stayed home instead of going out.

    instead of の後ろに動詞を置くときは、動名詞の -ing 形にします。

  • 誤: We decided instead to pizza.

    正: We decided to have pizza instead.

    instead は「代わりに」という副詞なので、to pizza のようには使いません。自然には文末に置けます。
