使い方

• 文頭でよく使う

  alternatively は新しい選択肢を示すため、文頭で「Alternatively, ...」の形でよく使われます。少し丁寧で、説明文やビジネス文書にも合います。

• alternately との違い

  alternatively は「別の選択肢として」という意味です。一方、alternately は「交互に」という意味です。例：The lights flashed alternately. は「ライトが交互に点滅した」という意味です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: We can alternatively to take a taxi.

  正: Alternatively, we can take a taxi.

  alternatively は副詞なので、その直後に to 不定詞を直接続ける形は不自然です。文全体を修飾する形にすると自然です。

• 誤: The children sat alternatively boys and girls.

  正: The children sat alternately, boys and girls.

  「男の子、女の子の順に交互に」は alternately を使います。alternatively は「代わりの選択肢として」です。
