instead of

の代わりに、ではなく A ではなく B を選ぶ、または何かを別のものに置き換えるときに使います。of の後には名詞・代名詞・動名詞が来ます。

...しないで、その代わりに instead of doing の形で、『...する代わりに』を表します。

使い方

of の後は名詞か動名詞

instead of coffee, instead of him, instead of going のように使います。to go のような不定詞は続けません。
instead だけでも使える

対象を言わずに『その代わりに』と言うときは instead を文末に置けます。例: I stayed home instead.

よくある間違い

誤: I stayed home instead to go out.

正: I stayed home instead of going out.

instead of の後に動詞を置くときは動名詞にします。
誤: I drank tea instead coffee.

正: I drank tea instead of coffee.

instead of の of を忘れないようにします。
誤: Instead of, I took the train.

正: I took the train instead.

後ろに置き換えられる対象を言わない場合は instead だけを使います。
