使い方

• 「劣等感」は sense of inferiority が自然

  inferiority だけでも「劣等感」を表せますが、日常的には a feeling of inferiority や a sense of inferiority と言うことが多いです。

• 形容詞は inferior

  inferiority は名詞で、「劣っていること」という状態を表します。「劣っている」と言いたいときは形容詞 inferior を使い、inferior to ...「〜より劣っている」とします。

よくある間違い

• 誤: He has inferiority than his brother.

  正: He has a feeling of inferiority toward his brother.

  inferiority は通常 than と直接つなげません。気持ちを表す場合は a feeling of inferiority toward ... や a sense of inferiority about ... が自然です。

• 誤: This machine is inferiority to the old one.

  正: This machine is inferior to the old one.

  inferiority は名詞なので be 動詞の後にそのまま置いて形容詞のようには使えません。「劣っている」は inferior to を使います。
