使い方

• gather と collect の違い

  collect は「計画的に集める」「コレクションする」という感じが強く、gather は「散らばっているもの・人・情報を一か所に集める」という広い意味で使えます。collect stamps は「切手を集める」、gather information は「情報を集める」が自然です。

• 自動詞と他動詞の両方で使える

  gather は目的語を取って「〜を集める」とも、目的語なしで「集まる」とも使えます。例: People gathered. は「人々が集まった」、She gathered flowers. は「彼女は花を集めた」です。

• I gather that ... は控えめな表現

  I gather that ... は「…だと理解しています」「…のようですね」という意味で、直接断定しすぎない丁寧な言い方として使えます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Many people gathered to the park.

  正: Many people gathered in the park.

  「公園に集まった」は gathered in the park や gathered at the park が自然です。to は移動先を強調する時に使いますが、gather では場所を表す in/at がよく使われます。

• 誤: I gathered many informations.

  正: I gathered a lot of information.

  information は不可算名詞なので、many informations とは言いません。a lot of information や much information を使います。

• 誤: We gathered about the problem.

  正: We gathered information about the problem.

  gather は「情報を集める」という意味で使う時、information, data, evidence などの目的語が必要です。
