使い方

  • district は「区」より広く使える

    日本語の「区」は行政上の区分を指すことが多いですが、district は shopping district（商店街・商業地区）、business district（ビジネス街）、historic district（歴史地区）のように、特徴を持つ地域にも広く使えます。

  • district は数えられる名詞

    一つの地区を言うときは a district や the district のように冠詞を付けることが多いです。複数なら districts になります。

よくある間違い

  • 誤: I live in district near the station.

    正: I live in a district near the station.

    district は数えられる名詞なので、単数で使う場合はふつう a や the が必要です。

  • 誤: This area is very district.

    正: This area is very distinct.

    district は名詞で「地区」です。「はっきり違う」という形容詞は distinct です。つづりと発音が似ているので注意しましょう。
