使い方

• discover と find の違い

  find は「探していた物を見つける」に広く使えます。discover は「今まで知らなかったことを新しく知る・発見する」というニュアンスが強く、事実、場所、方法、才能などによく使います。

• discover that 節

  「〜だと分かる」は discover that ... の形が自然です。例: We discovered that the door was locked.（ドアに鍵がかかっていることが分かった。）

• discover about は普通使わない

  「〜について知る」は learn about や find out about が自然です。discover は通常、目的語を直接取ります。例: discover the truth, discover a problem

よくある間違い

• 誤: I discovered about the new rule yesterday.

  正: I learned about the new rule yesterday.

  discover about は不自然です。「〜について知る」は learn about または find out about を使います。

• 誤: She discovered me the answer.

  正: She helped me discover the answer.

  discover は通常「人に〜を発見させる」という形では使いません。help someone discover ... のように言います。

• 誤: We discovered the station after looking for ten minutes.

  正: We found the station after looking for ten minutes.

  単に探していた場所にたどり着いた場合は find が自然です。discover は新しい事実や未知の場所を見つける感じが強いです。
