使い方

• difficult と hard の違い

  difficult は少し丁寧で標準的な語です。hard も「難しい」という意味で日常会話によく使われます。a difficult question はややきちんとした響き、a hard question はより口語的です。

• 「人」を主語にしにくい使い方

  日本語では「私は難しい」と言うことがありますが、英語では普通 I am difficult. とは言いません。『私には難しい』は It is difficult for me. や This is difficult for me. と言います。I am difficult. は『私は扱いにくい人だ』という意味になります。

• difficult は impossible ではない

  difficult は『難しいが、できる可能性はある』という意味です。『不可能』と言いたいときは impossible を使います。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I am difficult to solve this problem.

  正: It is difficult for me to solve this problem.

  『私にはこの問題を解くのが難しい』は、It is difficult for me to ... の形が自然です。I am difficult は『私は扱いにくい』という意味になりやすいです。

• 誤: This problem is difficult to me.

  正: This problem is difficult for me.

  『私にとって難しい』は difficult for me が自然です。to me は意見を述べる表現で使うこともありますが、この文では for me が一般的です。

• 誤: It is difficult that I finish the work today.

  正: It is difficult for me to finish the work today.

  difficult の後は that節より、for 人 to do の形がよく使われます。
