使い方

• council と counsel の違い

  council は「議会・委員会」という名詞です。counsel は「助言」または「助言する」という意味で、発音は同じですがつづりと意味が違います。

• 地方自治体を指す the council

  イギリス英語では the council が「市役所・地方自治体」のような意味で使われることがあります。例: You should contact the council. は「自治体に連絡したほうがいい」という意味です。

• 集団名詞としての使い方

  council は1つの組織を指すときは単数扱いが普通です。メンバー全体を意識するとき、イギリス英語では複数扱いになることもあります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I asked the council for advice about my career.

  正: I asked a counselor for advice about my career.

  career の相談相手は通常 council ではなく counselor「カウンセラー」です。council は人々の組織を指します。
