counsel は advice より改まった響きがあり、重要な判断・人生相談・法律相談などで使われやすい語です。日常的な『ちょっとしたアドバイス』には advice が自然です。

counsel は『助言』または『弁護士』、council は『議会、評議会、委員会』です。発音は同じですが、意味とつづりが違います。
