使い方

• companion と friend の違い

  friend は「友達」という関係そのものを表します。companion は「一緒にいる人・一緒に行動する人」という意味が強く、必ずしも親友とは限りません。

• companion と company の違い

  companion は数えられる名詞で「連れ、仲間」という人や動物を指します。company は不可算名詞で「一緒にいること、付き合い」という状態を表すことがあります。例: I enjoy her company. は「彼女と一緒にいるのが楽しい」という意味です。

• a companion to ... の形

  本や教材などについて a companion to the textbook のように言うと、「その教科書を補う手引き・関連資料」という意味になります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: He is a companion with me.

  正: He is my companion.

  「私の連れ」は my companion と言います。companion with me は不自然です。

• 誤: I need companion when I travel.

  正: I need a companion when I travel.

  companion は数えられる名詞なので、単数形では a companion のように冠詞が必要です。

• 誤: My companion is very fun.

  正: My companion is very fun to be with.

  人について fun だけでも口語では使われますが、「一緒にいて楽しい」と言いたい場合は fun to be with が自然です。
