使い方

  • 意味は文脈で決まる

    case は「場合」「事例」「裁判」「容器」など多くの意味を持つ基本語です。in this case なら「この場合」、a court case なら「裁判・訴訟」、a phone case なら「スマホケース」です。

  • in case と in case of の違い

    in case + 文 は「〜するといけないから」。例: Take a coat in case it gets cold. in case of + 名詞 は「〜の場合には」。例: In case of fire, use the stairs.

  • just in case

    just in case は「念のため」という会話で非常によく使う表現です。理由をはっきり言わなくても、予備として何かをする感じを出します。

  • the case と a case

    the case は「その状況・その事件」のように特定されたもの、a case は「1つの事例・1件の事件」のように数えられるものを表します。

よくある間違い

  • 誤: In case of it rains, take an umbrella.

    正: In case it rains, take an umbrella.

    in case の後ろには文を続けます。in case of の後ろには名詞を置くので、In case of rain と言えます。

  • 誤: This is important in the case.

    正: This is important in this case.

    「この場合」と言いたいときは in this case が自然です。in the case だけでは何のケースか分かりにくくなります。

  • 誤: I bought a case for protect my phone.

    正: I bought a case to protect my phone.

    目的を表すときは for + 動詞原形ではなく、to + 動詞原形を使います。for protection のように名詞なら使えます。
