使い方

• 「状況」を表す基本語

  situation は、今の状態や周りの条件をまとめて言うときに使います。日常会話、仕事、ニュースなど幅広い場面で使える便利な語です。

• condition との違い

  condition は「状態」や「条件」に焦点があります。situation は、人・出来事・環境を含む「全体の状況」に焦点があります。例: the economic situation は経済を取り巻く全体の状況、the condition of the car は車そのものの状態です。

• in a situation の形が多い

  「〜な状況で」は in a difficult situation, in this situation, in that situation のように in を使うのが自然です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I am in a bad condition at work.

  正: I am in a difficult situation at work.

  仕事で困った立場や状況にあると言いたい場合は、condition より situation が自然です。condition は体調や物の状態にもよく使います。

• 誤: The situation of my phone is bad.

  正: The condition of my phone is bad.

  電話そのものの物理的な状態を言う場合は condition が自然です。situation は周囲の事情や事態を表します。

• 誤: On this situation, we should wait.

  正: In this situation, we should wait.

  「この状況では」は on ではなく in this situation と言います。
