使い方

「大気」は普通 the atmosphere

地球を包む大気を言うときは、ふつう the atmosphere と言います。例: carbon dioxide in the atmosphere（大気中の二酸化炭素）。
「雰囲気」は場所にも状況にも使える

atmosphere は a friendly atmosphere（親しみやすい雰囲気）、a tense atmosphere（緊張した空気）のように、人が感じるムードを表せます。
mood との違い

mood は人の気分や場のムードに使います。atmosphere は場所全体から感じる空気感に使いやすく、レストランや街、部屋などによく合います。

よくある間違い

誤: There are many gases in atmosphere.

正: There are many gases in the atmosphere.

地球の大気全体を指すときは、ふつう定冠詞 the を付けて the atmosphere と言います。
誤: The restaurant has a good air.

正: The restaurant has a good atmosphere.

日本語の「いい空気・雰囲気」を直訳して good air とすると不自然です。場所の雰囲気には atmosphere が自然です。

会議などの場では at the meeting が自然です。また nervous は人に使うことが多く、雰囲気には tense（緊張した）が自然です。
