assumption と guess の違い
guess は『当てずっぽうの推測』に近く、日常的で軽い表現です。assumption は、計画・議論・判断の土台になる『前提』や、証拠が弱い『思い込み』を表します。

よく使う形
make an assumption（仮定する・思い込む）、based on the assumption that ...（〜という前提に基づいて）、challenge/question an assumption（前提を疑う）の形でよく使います。

that 節と一緒に使う
『〜という前提』と言いたいときは the assumption that ... が自然です。例えば the assumption that prices will rise は『価格が上がるという前提』です。
よくある間違い

assumption には make を使うのが自然です。do an assumption とは言いません。

『〜という前提』は assumption that ... の形にします。to 不定詞ではなく that 節を使います。

人について証拠なく否定的に決めつけると失礼に聞こえます。動詞 assume を使う場合も、根拠がある表現にすると自然です。
