金額、総額支払うお金や受け取るお金がどれくらいかを表します。

合計で〜になる amount to の形で、数・金額・量などが合計してある値になることを表します。

使い方

amount of と number of の違い

amount of は water, time, money, information など数えにくい名詞に使います。number of は people, books, questions など数えられる名詞の複数形に使います。
動詞では amount to が基本

動詞の amount は多くの場合 amount to の形で使い、「合計で〜になる」「結局〜に等しい」という意味になります。

よくある間違い

誤: There were a large amount of students in the room.

正: There were a large number of students in the room.

students は数えられる名詞の複数形なので、amount ではなく number を使うのが自然です。
誤: The cost amounted $500.

正: The cost amounted to $500.

動詞 amount は「合計で〜になる」という意味では amount to の形にします。
誤: I have many amount of work today.

正: I have a large amount of work today.

amount は名詞なので、many amount とは言いません。work は数えにくい名詞なので a large amount of work が自然です。
