その後で、後で ある出来事が終わったあとに、別のことが起こることを表します。
後になって、あとから すぐではなく、少し時間がたってから何かが分かる・起こる場合に使います。
以後、それ以降 ある時点より後の期間を指して、物事が続く・変わることを表します。afterward とも言います。

afterwards は前置詞ではないので、直後に名詞 the meeting を置けません。名詞を続ける場合は after を使います。

使い方

afterwards と afterward
afterwards は主にイギリス英語でよく使われ、afterward はアメリカ英語でよく使われます。意味はほぼ同じで、「その後で、後で」です。

after との違い
after は前置詞や接続詞として after dinner「夕食後に」、after I arrived「私が到着した後で」のように後ろに名詞や文を取れます。afterwards は副詞なので、単独で「その後で」と使います。

文末に置きやすい
afterwards は We talked afterwards. のように文末に置くことが多いです。文頭で Afterwards, we talked. としても使えます。
よくある間違い

誤: Afterwards the meeting, we had lunch.
正: After the meeting, we had lunch.
afterwards は前置詞ではないので、直後に名詞 the meeting を置けません。名詞を続ける場合は after を使います。

正: We went to the station afterwards.
afterwards は文末に置くと自然です。to the station の前に置くと不自然に聞こえます。
