  名詞

  売るために作られた品物を表す語です。日常会話では単数の ware よりも、複数形の wares がよく使われます。

使い方

• 単独ではやや古風・商業的

  ware を単独で「商品」という意味で使うと、少し古風または商業的に聞こえることがあります。現代英語では goods, products, items のほうが一般的です。ただし wares は市場や露店の商品を表す自然な語です。

• 複合語で非常によく使う

  ware は tableware「食器」、software「ソフトウェア」、hardware「金物・ハードウェア」、kitchenware「台所用品」のように、他の語と結びついてよく使われます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I bought a beautiful wear at the market.

  正: I bought a beautiful piece of ware at the market.

  wear は「身に着ける」「衣服の着用」などの意味です。商品や陶器を表す場合は ware を使います。

• 誤: The store sells many ware.

  正: The store sells many kinds of ware.

  ware は単数形では集合的・不可算的に使われることが多いので、many ware は不自然です。many kinds of ware または many wares とします。
