  よくない知らせや、期待どおりでないことを伝えるときに使う副詞です。文の最初に置くことが多いです。

使い方

• 文頭で使うときはコンマを置くことが多い

  文全体にかかる場合、Unfortunately, ... の形がよく使われます。会話でもメールでも自然です。

• 謝罪ではなく状況説明

  unfortunately は「残念なことに」という状況を表します。自分の責任で謝るときは I'm sorry も一緒に使うと自然です。例: I'm sorry, but unfortunately we cannot accept returns.

よくある間違い

• 誤: Unfortunately, I can't to join the party.

  正: Unfortunately, I can't join the party.

  can't の後は動詞の原形を使います。to join ではなく join が正しいです。

• 誤: I am unfortunately today.

  正: Unfortunately, I'm having a bad day.

  unfortunately は普通、人そのものを説明する形容詞のようには使いません。「今日はついていない」と言うなら having a bad day や unlucky を使います。
