形容詞

unable

〜できない 能力・時間・状況などの理由で、何かをすることができない状態を表します。ふつう unable to do の形で使います。
〜することが不可能な、困難な 単に「できない」だけでなく、状況や制限のために実行が不可能であることを少し硬めに表します。

使い方

  • unable to do の形で使う

    unable の後ろにはふつう to + 動詞の原形が続きます。例: unable to speak, unable to work, unable to help.

  • can't より少し丁寧・硬い

    日常会話では can't がよく使われます。unable to は仕事のメール、案内、説明文などで少し丁寧または正式に聞こえます。

  • 人にも物にも使える

    人が何かできない場合だけでなく、機械・アプリ・会社などが機能や対応をできない場合にも使えます。

よくある間違い

  • 誤: I am unable going to the party.

    正: I am unable to go to the party.

    unable の後ろは動名詞ではなく、to + 動詞の原形にします。

  • 誤: I unable to open the file.

    正: I am unable to open the file.

    unable は形容詞なので、主語の後に be 動詞が必要です。

  • 誤: He is unable speak English.

    正: He is unable to speak English.

    unable の後ろで動詞を続けるときは to が必要です。
