  ある状況や例が、教科書に載っているように分かりやすく典型的であることを表します。ふつう名詞の前で使います。

使い方

• 「テキスト」は textbook が自然なことが多い

  日本語で授業用の本を「テキスト」と言いますが、英語の text だけだと「文章」「本文」「メッセージ」などの意味になりやすいです。授業で使う本は textbook と言うと自然です。

• 形容詞では「教科書の」ではなく「典型的な」

  a textbook example や a textbook case は「教科書の例」ではなく、「非常に典型的で分かりやすい例」という意味です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I bought a new text for my English class.

  正: I bought a new textbook for my English class.

  授業で使う本を言いたい場合、text だけより textbook の方が自然です。text は「本文」や「文章」という意味で使われることが多いです。

• 誤: I wrote notes in my textbook book.

  正: I wrote notes in my textbook.

  textbook の中に book の意味が含まれているので、textbook book とは言いません。

• 誤: This is a textbook of good planning.

  正: This is a textbook example of good planning.

  形容詞の textbook は example や case などの名詞の前で使うのが自然です。
