使い方

• 法的な場面でよく使う語

  testimony は特に裁判・議会・調査委員会など、公式な場での「証言」によく使われます。日常のちょっとした発言には statement や comment のほうが自然です。

• a testimony to ... の形

  「a testimony to 名詞」で「〜の証し、〜を物語るもの」という意味になります。例: Her success is a testimony to her hard work.（彼女の成功は努力の証しだ。）

• 不可算・可算の両方がある

  裁判での証言全体を指すときは不可算名詞として使われることが多いです。一方、複数の人の個別の証言や体験談を指すときは testimonies という複数形も使われます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: He said a testimony in court.

  正: He gave testimony in court.

  「証言する」は say a testimony ではなく、give testimony または testify を使うのが自然です。

• 誤: The testimony was a big evidence.

  正: The testimony was important evidence.

  evidence は通常不可算名詞なので a big evidence とは言いません。testimony と evidence は近いですが、testimony は人が述べる証言、evidence は証拠全体を指します。
