• 唯一の、たった一つの

  形容詞

  同じ種類のものがほかになく、それ一つだけであることを表します。名詞の前に置いて使います。

使い方

• sole は名詞の前で使う形容詞

  「唯一の」という意味の sole は、ふつう a sole reason よりも the sole reason のように the と一緒に使われることが多いです。例: That was the sole reason for his decision.

• sole と soul の違い

  sole と soul はどちらも発音が同じですが、意味が違います。sole は「唯一の」「足の裏」「靴底」、soul は「魂」「心」です。

• only より少し硬い響き

  sole は only と近い意味ですが、契約・責任・権利・ニュースなどでやや硬く使われます。日常会話では only の方が自然な場面も多いです。

よくある間違い

• 誤: He is my soul friend in this city.

  正: He is my sole friend in this city.

  「唯一の友人」と言いたい場合は soul ではなく sole を使います。soul は「魂」という意味です。

• 誤: This is the reason sole I came here.

  正: This is the sole reason I came here.

  sole は形容詞なので、修飾する名詞 reason の前に置きます。

• 誤: My shoe's soul is broken.

  正: The sole of my shoe is broken.

  靴底は sole です。soul は「魂」なので靴底には使いません。
