使い方

  • scarcity of の形が多い

    scarcity は名詞で、後ろに不足しているものを言うときはよく “a scarcity of water” のように of を使います。

  • shortage より少し硬め

    scarcity は shortage と近い意味ですが、少し硬く、社会問題・経済・資源の話でよく使われます。日常会話では shortage のほうが自然なことも多いです。

  • 数えられない名詞として使うことが多い

    scarcity はふつう単数形で使います。“the scarcity of food” や “a scarcity of jobs” のように言います。

よくある間違い

  • 誤: There is a scarcity water in the city.

    正: There is a scarcity of water in the city.

    scarcity の後に不足しているものを続けるときは、通常 of が必要です。

  • 誤: We have scarcity of time today.

    正: We have a scarcity of time today.

    具体的に『〜の不足がある』と言うときは “a scarcity of ...” が自然です。ただし “water scarcity” のように名詞を前に置く表現もあります。

  • 誤: The product is scarcity.

    正: The product is scarce.

    scarcity は名詞なので、be 動詞の後で『不足している』と言いたい場合は形容詞 scarce を使います。
