  形容詞

  すでに述べた複数の人や物について、一つ一つに対応するものを表す形容詞。多くの場合、複数名詞と一緒に使います。

  複数の項目があり、それぞれが別々の相手・場所・役割などに結びついていることを表します。少し硬めで、仕事や説明文でよく使われます。

使い方

• 「respectful」と混同しない

  respective は「それぞれの」という意味です。respectful は「礼儀正しい、敬意を示す」という意味で、意味が大きく違います。

• their respective ... の形がよく使われる

  複数の人・物について「各自の〜」「それぞれの〜」と言うとき、their respective departments, their respective roles のように使います。

• やや硬めの表現

  日常会話では each や own を使うことも多いですが、respective は仕事、ニュース、説明文などで自然です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: The students went back to their respectful classrooms.

  正: The students went back to their respective classrooms.

  respectful は「敬意を示す」という意味です。「それぞれの教室」は respective classrooms と言います。

• 誤: Ken and Yuki are 20 and 22 respective.

  正: Ken and Yuki are 20 and 22, respectively.

  文末で「それぞれ」を表すときは形容詞 respective ではなく、副詞 respectively を使います。
