使い方

• reinforce と strengthen の違い

  どちらも「強くする」という意味ですが、reinforce は「すでにあるものに何かを加えて補強する」という感じが強い語です。strengthen はより広く、体力・関係・経済などを単に強くする場合にも使えます。

• reinforce と enforce を混同しない

  reinforce は「強化する・補強する」、enforce は「法律や規則を実施させる・守らせる」です。つづりが似ていますが意味は違います。

• 物にも考えにも使える

  reinforce a door のように物理的に補強する場合にも、reinforce an idea のように考えや印象を強める場合にも使えます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: The police reinforced the law strictly.

  正: The police enforced the law strictly.

  法律を守らせる場合は enforce を使います。reinforce は「強化する・補強する」です。

  正: We need to strengthen our muscles by running every day.

  筋肉そのものを強くする場合は strengthen が自然です。reinforce は壁や計画などを「補強する」感じで使います。

  reinforce は他動詞なので、目的語を直接続けます。通常 reinforce to my opinion とは言いません。
