skill より少し硬い語
proficiency は単なる「スキル」よりも、十分に練習して身についた高い能力を表すことが多く、履歴書・試験・教育・仕事の文脈でよく使われます。

proficiency in の形が多い
何に熟達しているかを言うときは、通常 proficiency in English、proficiency in programming のように in を使います。
よくある間違い

誤: He has proficiency of English.
正: He has proficiency in English.
「〜の能力・熟達」は proficiency in を使うのが自然です。

正: She is proficient in Spanish.
proficiency は名詞なので be 動詞の後にそのまま置くより、形容詞 proficient を使うのが自然です。名詞を使うなら She has proficiency in Spanish. と言えます。
